when the crew land on the planet, what is that thing in the chair before they go down that hole into the egg chamber, just 1dering

They refer to it as a "space jockey." Basically, it's the creature that flew the alien spacecraft.

The “thing” in the chair was the fossilized remains of the pilot/captain of the alien spacecraft they were on. It is where he died when he scuttled the ship to prevent the hostile life form from escaping the planet.

Was a good idea until the humans got there!
