Despite the popular media habit of ridiculing those who have witnessed UFO's and then spoken up about it, there are some witnesses to these events that are deemed above reproach. Since the very beginning of the American space program's journeys above our Earth, our astronauts have been routine witnesses to these unidentified flying craft. In the words of Scott Carpenter, "At no time, when the astronauts were in space were they alone: there was a constant surveillance by UFOs."

Major Gordon Cooper was making a 22-orbit trip around the planet on May 15, 1963 in a Mercury space capsule when he reported a glowing greenish object approaching him. It was also picked up on the Muchea (Australia) tracking radar. Despite Cooper's mention of the UFO being broadcast on the NBC television network, reporters were warned not to ask about the event when he got back to Earth.

A few years later, June 1965, and astronauts Ed White and James McDivitt were sailing far above Hawaii in their Gemini capsule when they spotted a strange looking metallic object in orbit with them. Rather than a saucer shape, this UFO had a number of long "arms" sticking out from it. Despite taking photographs and motion pictures of the object, none of these images have been released for the public to see. Later that year, in December, James Lovell and Frank Borman were aboard Gemini 7 when they reported a bogey at 10 o'clock. Gemini Control asked if they were just seeing the booster rocket. Lovell replied that, "We have several actual sightings. We also have the booster in sight."

Since first being used by Walter Schirra on his Mercury 8 flight, the code name "Santa Claus" has been used to indicate to ground control when a UFO has been spotted tracking an Earth space capsule. This was to minimize public knowledge of just what was going on in the space above our planet when we ventured outward. Knowing this code helps remove the jauntiness of James Lovell's comment when he first came out from behind the moon on his Apollo 8 fly-around and greeted the world with the words, "Please be informed that there is a Santa Claus."

The ultimate close encounter with "Santa Claus" was to be experienced by Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin made their historic moon landing in Apollo 11 in July of 1969. After reporting a "light" in or on the crater wall, Mission Control asked for more details and then the public broadcast from the astronauts was cut. Several ham radio operators with their own VHF receivers did record the following conversation, which was cut from the "official" broadcast.

NASA: "What’s there? Mission Control calling Apollo 11..."

Apollo 11: "These "Babies" are huge, Sir! Enormous! OH MY GOD! You wouldn't believe it! I'm telling you there are other spacecraft out there, Lined up on the far side of the crater edge! They're on the Moon watching us!"

If we cannot believe the words of our own spacefaring heroes about the reality of extraterrestrial life and spacecraft, whom then can we believe?

A most disturbing aspect of the alien question is the ever increasing insistence of abduction and biological testing on humans by beings not of this world. Skeptics insist these reports are merely delusional folk seeking some notoriety from bizarre stories or just mentally disturbed. There is, however, one aspect of the abduction reports that has taken a physical form that can be investigated. Since the abduction phenomena began to grow in the 1960' and 70's there has also grown the matter of strange objects being implanted in the bodies of these unfortunate people.

These implants are not a fantasy. A fair number of them have been surgically removed and analyzed by reputable laboratories including the prestigious Los Alamos National Labs. Such people as the Californian podiatrist, Roger Leir, and UFO researcher Dr. John Mack have removed dozens of implants from alien abductees over the years. The objects are small and are usually inserted far up the nasal cavity but also found in other parts of the body. The material of the implants usually consists of "An interestingly twisted fiber consisting of carbon, silicon, oxygen, no nitrogen, and traces of other elements" according to Dr. Mack. As the "usually" implies, there have been several distinctively different types found and removed.

These anomalous objects are often first discovered when a person has been X-rayed, most usually during dental examinations. Not only are the objects metallic but are often surrounded by their own small electro-magnetic field. When removed, they are often found to be encased in a protective membrane and many are connected to nerve endings or nerve bundles, causing great pain upon removal even when the patient has been anesthetized. Thus far no progress has been made towards discovering how these objects may work or to what purpose they serve those who initially placed them inside their victims.

The purpose of these implants is a much-discussed topic. The most popular hypothesis is that they are merely tracking devices of some sort to make it easier for the "tagged" person to be found and their status and condition updated when desired. This may not necessarily be the case as a few people who have had their implants removed still suffer subsequent abduction events. Another possibility is that they are some form of monitoring device, much like the devices our own scientists use to keep track of the health and processes of our own planetary species. For the more paranoid, it has been suggested the implants are used to implement mind control over the victim.

There are a few certainties about these implants. They are in no way naturally occurring objects in a human body and rarely does the bearer of such a device remember the process by which it came to be in them. The phenomena came to light long before the idea of micro-chipping pets, and ultimately all humans, began to be implemented by our own scientists and government, it may in fact be what gave them the idea. To our common knowledge we have no understanding of what technology creates or manipulates these devices. All we do know for sure is that they only appear in people who also claim to be victims of alien abduction so the chances of a mundane Earthly origin is slim.

With the increased prevalence of UFO reports from around the world a person stands a chance of seeing some unusual object in the skies just about anywhere they happen to be. There are however some places that seem to draw anomalous sightings like flies to sugar. If you are tired of waiting in your own back yard for that mysterious sighting, you may want to book passage to some of the "UFO hotspots" where strange lights and objects seem to congregate.

North America has a number of these places where multiple sightings are common. Upper New York near Niagara Falls gets more than its share of unidentifiable lights in the sky. To the West, Mount Adams, Washington is host to so many unexplainable light shows that James Gilliland, founder of Enlightened Contact with Extra Terrestrial Intelligence (ECETI) has a ranch at the mountain's base where he hosts UFO seekers who are rarely disappointed. Mount Adams is also where pilot Kenneth Arnold saw the craft that first inspired the term "flying saucer" in 1947.

Mexico City, Mexico and the surrounding countryside seem to attract a number of different types of UFO. In April 2005 thousands of citizens of the city witnessed what was first a few silvery orbs floating in the sky only to be stunned as well over a hundred of these mysterious objects appeared and maneuvered through the sky. The event provided great film footage as the event was in full daylight just as so many UFO sightings in Mexico City occur.

Wiltshire, England is an area that contains not only the monolithic Stonehenge but also wide fields that continue to erupt in crop circles. For over 50 years the citizens have become almost used to the strange lights in the sky and deep booming sounds coming down from above. UFO hunters even hold an annual sky watch at Cradle Hill and are frequent observers at nearby Cley Hill.

Since the early 1990's the number of shiny metallic looking spheres appearing around San Clemente, Chile, prompted the local tourism board to dub the area the "UFO Trail" in 2008. While the terrain is rough, serious UFO hunters often travel to nearby El Enlandrillado for a chance to catch the aerial shows.

ET has not forgotten Australia either. Wycliffe Well, Northern Territory, is as well known for UFO activity as the area around Roswell, New Mexico. The Falkirk Triangle in Scotland has spent the last twenty years being presented with multiple unidentified lights and craft. Thousands of residents have reported these oft-occurring events with the small town of Bonnybridge topping the list with an average of 300 sightings a year. Falkirk was responsible for over 6,000 pages of report data recently released to the public by the Ministry of Defense.

These are not the only places for long-term multiple sightings. From the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico to Sochi, Russia, to Ladakh in the Himalayan Mountains some areas of our Earth seem to hold an especial fondness for whatever or whoever pilots these mysterious craft.

Official and government agencies of UFO study have run the gambit from absolute denial to releasing sighting reports to finally disbanding their study groups. You would think that with such powerful militaries studying the phenomena of unidentified craft in our skies they would have actually found something out but according to their own conclusions they are still clueless. There is a movement growing to turn over the study, if not full investigations, to a new set of seekers.

College students are for the most part, young, bright, and able to see without the constraint society has put on people as they grow accustomed to the status quo. The Niagara County Community College of New York, a state run school, has suggested that since their area of the country averages over fifty sighting reports a month (that's nearly two per day) that the subject should be allowed as a serious elective study course at the college. Philip Haseley, an anthropology professor at the school, feels it is a "serious area of study" and should be included as a mainstream topic. "(A sighting) happens to millions of people (around the world)," he said. "It's about time we looked into this as a worthy area of study. It's important that the whole subject be brought out in the open and investigated."

Just because Professor Haseley is also the head of the Western New York Mutual UFO Network does not diminish the validity of his call for serious study of the phenomena of UFO's by college students. His group of investigators already use the best possible scientific manner in their field investigations, including radar, meteorology, and astronomy to gather their evidence of aerial anomalies. Who better than the intelligent, knowledge seeking students of the College to analyze this data and use their fresh new insights into attempting to piece this puzzle into a scholarly conclusion.

More colleges and universities might lend their support to gaining the extra resources and minds of their young people to examine their own area's sightings. There were over four hundred sighting reports taken by the British Ministry of Defense last year alone, before they decided to quit bothering themselves with unknown objects intruding into their airspace. If the world governments and military already know what these objects are, they should come clean with that knowledge rather than try to sweep it under the rug. If they are still stumped for an explanation, why not let the youth that will make up the next generation of leaders get involved in research that has the collegiate oversight to assure good, useable data in dealing with what has become a worldwide epidemic of UFO sightings and encounters.

With the topic becoming a serious collegiate course, the era of offhand ridicule of witnesses can come to an end. By allowing serious study and investigation at the university level, there should be less hesitation on the part of witnesses to share their experience. With luck, this more serious approach should improve the process of winnowing out hoaxes and give greater credence to those events that can be labeled as real even if they are as yet unexplained.

We are used to searching the sky for signs of alien contact but that is not the only place we are able to look. Ten billion miles away, at the edges of our solar system's heliosphere, the two Voyager probes have left the planets behind and are set to pass out into interstellar space within a few years. Surprisingly these forty-year-old spacecraft are still transmitting data back to Earth about the conditions around them. At the speed of light it still takes thirteen hours to bridge the gulf.

On April 22, 2010 the transmissions from Voyager 2 changed. The data being received was suddenly in a new format, one which the scientists in charge of the data stream say they cannot understand. The official reason given to the press and public is that it is a "glitch" despite the control and diagnostics transmissions having not been affected at all.

Interestingly both Voyagers carry a copy of the Golden Record, "... a kind of time capsule, intended to communicate a story of our world to extraterrestrials. The Voyager message is carried by a phonograph record-a 12-inch gold-plated copper disk containing sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth," along with a device that might allow any alien discoverers to play back and receive our message to them. Is it possible that some alien presence has found the message, played it, and are using our own transmitter to send back a reply about themselves? If so, they are being rudely hung up on.

Doctor Edward Stone, a project scientist who was one of those who helped construct Voyager 2, has stated that the spacecraft was ordered to halt all data stream transmissions and only transmit the engineering data about the status and condition of the craft. This information has not changed in format and reports that the spacecraft is still in fine condition and that the on-board computer is still functioning properly, aside from the change in the formatting of the scientific data stream transmissions.

It is fortunate that the "glitch" was just in the data transmissions back to Earth and not the engineering transmissions. These facts have led to massive speculation as to what is really going on and just what information might have eventually been discovered by analyzing and trying to interpret this data. We may never know since after just the one "reformatted" data transmission NASA cut it off. They do not confirm anything special about that transmission even though you would think that the very idea its formatting had been changed might be considered unusual if not special.

It should make sense that we also look to outer space for evidence of beings from outer space. Even the Hubble space telescope has imaged some unidentified objects even within the boundary of our solar system. Despite misinformation and outright debunking, information and images still leak out of artifacts scattered across the faces of various planets and our own moon. Let us hope that reality does not mimic fiction and that the one transmission NASA received before turning off the link was "Resistance is futile."
